Online House Hunter: Open Houses

door 200x300 Online House Hunter: Open Houses

Normally closed doors are opening to the public in September

CAROLINE Roux writes in The Independent about the 750 homes in London throwing their doors open as part of the annual Open House London event.

Some of the capital’s best architecture from renovated Victorian Clapham House to the modernist work of architect Joe Morris in Kings Grove will be open to the public on September 17 and 18.

Such events provide great inspiration for those looking to build their own home, those trying to decide on whether to buy a period property or those simply looking for inspiration to revamp their existing home.

And the good news is that it’s not just London that allows people to sneak a look inside those dream homes you can normally only admire from afar. Indeed, Open House London is part of a worldwide initiative which includes Rome, Tel Aviv, Melbourne, Dublin, Galway and others. Open House Dublin and Galway hold their events during October and include walking tours looking at some of the best of Irish architecture.

Wales and Scotland haven’t been left out either. Open House Swansea includes a chance to glimpse inside everything from Dylan Thomas’ birthplace to Waste Water Treatment Works. In Scotland it’s the Civic Trust that organises Doors Open Days with hundreds of buildings revealing their secrets – and the events take place every weekend in September. They’ve even come up with a spin-off Open Gates theme where allotments, parks and gardens are opened up.

In England, it’s Heritage Open Days that capture the imagination each September. This takes place from September 8 to 11 with more than 4,000 properties inviting the public in. The range is phenomenal with everything from private homes to medieval castles throwing open their doors. Your only problem is deciding where to visit. English Heritage have a ‘take a peek‘ video to help you decide!

Brighton and Hove has its own take on the open houses theme with an Eco Open House event running from September 8 to 11. As the title suggests, each of the properties demonstrates a green approach with ways to saving on heating and water bills.

No doubt you’ll find plenty to inspire you wherever you end up – and perhaps in a year or so, you’ll be opening your self-build or restored home to the public as part of a future Open House event.
