iBet: How badly will New Zealand thump Tonga?

New Zealand v Tonga, World Cup Rugby

Back Tonga receiving 70.5 points with Betfair at 8/13

There?s no doubting that New Zealand will beat Tonga in this World Cup curtain raiser on Friday; the question is by how much? A look at what the fixed odds firms are offering through www.oddschecker.com shows that they are giving the Tongans between a 64 and 66 point start for just under even money; although Paddy Power are obviously looking to ?get? New Zealand by putting up a handicap of 62 points. I think Paddy Power have a point. Admittedly history is not on our side. In three meetings New Zealand have beat Tonga by an average of 74 points, and the South Sea Islanders have only ever scored one try against them. Not only that, but they have the worst disciplinary record of any team at the finals. However, there?s evidence to suggest that Tonga are much improved. Their captain says that experience of playing overseas ? 13 of their squad play in England, France or Wales – means the team will be much more controlled. And he is confident that they will not tire as they have in the past. Tonga have just risen to their highest ever world ranking of 12th after defeating Fiji in their warm-up schedule. I think they can stay within the 70.5 point handicap offered up by Betfair.

CANADIAN HARLEY-DAVIDSON XR1200 CUP ? ROUNDS 6 AND 7 Action-Packed Grand Finale in Mosport

From Deeley Harley-Davidson

BOWMANVILLE, Ontario ? Mosport International Raceway

Going into the CSBK-hosted final rounds of the 2011 Canadian Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup Series, MotoSport Plus-sponsored Steve Crevier had a healthy lead in the points battle with a full 61-point lead on Cochrane, Alberta rider, Cody Matechuk, riding for Privateers Harley-Davidson of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Darren James sat solidly in third overall.

Ruthless Racing Inc. rider, Darren James, who was sitting in fourth place in overall points, made his case known during Friday?s qualifying session with the day?s best lap time of 1:32.526 on the challenging 3.957-km Mosport circuit, earning his second pole position in a row. John Ross McRae had a brilliant outing with the second fastest time ? only 0.098 of a second behind James ? earning the Ruthless Racing Inc. rookie his first front row start in Saturday?s race. However, the stress of Friday?s qualifying took its toll on the transmission of James? Big Twin engine, leaving the Ruthless Racing Inc. mechanics the arduous task of rebuilding the engine until four o?clock in the morning. They completed the job just hours before the XR1200 bike was to be rolled out to do battle in the penultimate race of the Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup Series.

With dark, menacing rain clouds rolling in, and after painfully long delays in the action, the XR1200 motorcycles were finally rolled to the grid for their race. When the start lights finally dimmed, Ruthless Racing Inc. support rider, Michael Barnes, from Boca Raton, Florida, jumped out to an early lead. But the race quickly became a four-rider freight train of Barnes, J.R. McRae, Steve Crevier, and Darren James all vying for the win. McRae backed up his great qualifying session, constantly jumping into the lead, only to lose the advantage again to the hard-charging Barnes. Crevier looked for a way to seal his championship right then and there and briefly held the lead, but with constant pressure from Barnes and McRae he opted to not take any unnecessary chances of throwing it all away. The four lead riders continued their battle with Sherbrooke Harley-Davidson rider, Samuel Proulx, making up the gap. Behind him, a war was also being waged between Chris Harmon, racing for Vision Harley-Davidson, Cody Matechuk, racing under the umbrella of Privateers Harley-Davidson, guest rider, Oliver Jervis, racing on the Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada media bike, and Elie Daccache, supported by Harley-Davidson de L?Outaouais. When the chequered fabric was aired out at the end of the 14?lap final, it was Michael Barnes who dominated the race with a narrow margin of victory. J.R. McRae had another great ride to finish second ? his first podium finish of the season. Darren James held on to the final step of the podium, while Steve Crevier chased the leaders to the flag with a richly deserved fourth place, earning him the inaugural #1 plate for the Canadian Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup Series Championship, which was awarded to Crevier in person by none other than motorcycle racing patron, Don James, Chairman & CEO of Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada.

Crevier commented after the race, ?Those guys were getting away from me a little bit on the back straight and I decided that racing with them was getting a little too risky, so I stayed out of it a bit so I could win this championship.? He added, ?I just have to thank MotoSport Plus of Kingston and Pete Snell, my mechanic, because if it wasn?t for their help I wouldn?t be here right now.? With his great showing, J.R. McRae won the ?Performance Under Gear Performer of the Race? Award.

With the new champion already crowned, Sunday?s race was just for bragging rights, and for a race that could have been lacklustre it was anything but uneventful. Once again, just as in the previous day, four riders took an early check-out on the field and waged a war for the appreciative Mosport fans. In what turned out to be one of the most exciting races of the weekend, Barnes and Crevier left nothing on the table and all four lead riders were in the 1:31 lap times with only 0.2 of a second separating them. This time, Crevier, sporting his new #1 plate, was not playing it safe and was challenged for the lead at every turn, occasionally getting in front of the four-rider battle. On the final lap, Barnes seemed to have it all sowed up, but in the treacherous last turn, corner 10, Crevier made a daring pass up the inside of Barnes to win the drag race at the finish line, relegating the US rider to runner-up status. Darren James again took the final step of the podium with Samuel Proulx in a hard-earned fourth. Cody Matechuk finished in fifth, just ahead of Elie Daccache, with J.R. McRae falling back in the later stages of the race to finish in seventh.

The best-of-the-best Canadian racers will be competing in the upcoming AMA Pro?s Vance & Hines XR1200 event at the Red Bull Indy GP in Indianapolis, Indiana, on August 27 and 28.

Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada would like to take this opportunity to thank the racers and their teams, the Harley-Davidson Retailers supporting them, the many sponsors involved, as well as all of the enthusiasts across Canada who have helped make the new Canadian Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup Series an extraordinary experience for all involved.

MotoGP Championship Tightens

by Vicki Schouten

The fight for the MotoGP championship is far from over. Atleast, that's if defending number one plate holder Jorge Lorenzo has anything to say about it.  The Factory Yamaha rider completed the perfect race at the Misano circuit in Italy last Sunday, grabbing the holeshot from points leader Casey Stoner and holding off the Repsol Honda rider, crossing the line 7.299 seconds clear of second place finisher Dani Pedrosa, and a full 11.967 seconds ahead of Stoner. "This was a special victory," explained Lorenzo, who had been fighting off difficulties in the last few rounds, "the championship is not over."

Stoner, who had won the last three MotoGP races, was struggling to recover from the travel period between Indianapolis and Misano, as well as a lingering neck injury he received in Assen, "We had the bike to win the race today," explained Stoner, "I just started to get tired and there was no way I could keep the pace."

After attempting to challenge Lorenzo for the first half the race, Stoner was eventually overtaken by Repsol Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa who crossed the line in second, leaving the current world championship points leader to settle for third.

A three-way battle for fourth entertained the crowd as Honda's Marco Simoncelli worked his way through the grid from 7th position, challenging Yamaha's Ben Spies and Repsol Honda's Andrea Dovizioso in a tight three way battle that saw the Italian Simoncelli come out on top. Although quite pleased with his 4th place result, Simoncelli only wishes he'd had a better start that might have afforded him the opportunity to challenge for a podium position, "I'm satisfied with this result as 4th place was a realistic target," explained the Italian, "but I'm a little bit angry because I made a mistake off the start."

Spies, who struggled in morning warm-up, made a big change to the motorcycle before the race and it took him a while to get used to the new settings. By the time he got comfortable with the changes and closed on Rossi, he wasn't quite able to overtake the Honda riders, leaving the popular Texan to settle for 6th place position.

Casey Stoner continues to lead the MotoGP championship by 35 points over Jorge Lorenzo. With 5 races remaining the battle for the championship is tightening. The next round of the MotoGP series takes place at Motorland Aragon on September 16.

Current MotoGP World Standings after 13/18 races:

1. Casey Stoner, Respol Honda, 259 Points;
2. Jorge Lorenzo, Yamaha Factory Racing, 224;

Warehouse Project is over? for now

whp 131109 by smatthes 054 copy 300x200 Warehouse Project is over... for nowLast October I made the two-and-a-half hour journey up to Manchester to visit the city’s infamous Warehouse Project – a huge three-month long series of club nights, taking place in a warehouse space underneath Piccadilly station.

The venue is perfect in terms of location, space, acoustics and general atmosphere – dark, basic and a little bit grimy. So I was shocked to say the least when I read their announcement last month that this year’s WHP was to be the last at the Store Street car park. As much as nothing lasts forever, it was baffling to hear that the owners of the organisation would no longer be hosting parties there.

Their statement simply read: “After five incredible years beneath the streets, the last ever Warehouse Project event at Store Street will finish in the early hours of January 2, 2012. Within 48hrs all evidence that WHP ever existed in that space will be gone, nothing remaining to give any indication that hundreds of thousands of people passed through those doors.

The idea was always to keep things fresh. While The Warehouse Project certainly found its first proper home in this venue, it feels like when the curtain comes down on the 2011 series it will be time to shake things up again. Exactly how, where and when the WHP will return is not yet set, but one thing for sure is that this is The End of Store Street.

This last party will take the form of a seventeen-hour marathon taking us into 2012.

Thank you to everyone who has made it so special.”

With this in mind I spoke to Krysko, one of the event?s mainstays since its formative years, to talk about its beginnings, impact on the club scene in the north and where the event is going.

How long have you been a resident at WHP?

I was a resident at Sankey?s, when it was called Sankey Soaps, I left there in 2005 with the rest of the guys who started up the Warehouse Project.

Our first venue was the old Boddington?s factory, that was a real l baptism of fire but it taught everyone that we could do it. It was just an idea, a project, that no one really envisaged as something that would be ongoing. I think Manchester needed it at the time. After Boddington’s we found Store Street and we knew it would work – it?s not gi-normous you know, it?s a manageable venue.

So I?ve been resident since the beginning, which is about six years in total.

How do you feel about the Store Street site coming to an end?

I?d be lying if I said I?m not sorry to see it go. But after five years things can start to get stagnant and they need shaking up. There are only so many acts you can throw on a line up to rivitalise things so it?s probably about the right time to call it a day.

What effect would you say the event has had on clubbing in the north and the UK in general?

It?s been great. Because of the time scale of it, it?s kept people on their toes. People want to come to the parties because they?re only for a limited time, they?re not spoilt by a six-month long run of events ? Warehouse Project is only on for 12 weeks. It leaves people hungry for more, which feeds into the smaller clubs. It?s helped things flourish. But, like the demise of the Hacienda, when it disappears people will be searching for more of the same from other venues.

How would you describe WHP to someone who?s never been?

It?s a bit naughty. It?s about as close to that feeling of partying somewhere you shouldn?t as you can get. There?s not much dressing up of the venue, it?s very raw so it harks back to those old warehouse party days of the late 80s/early 90s. The main impact comes from the stage and the system, everything else is left a raw as can be.

In 2002 we threw a huge warehouse on Ancoats (in the centre of Manchester) which was attended by 10,000 people. Warehouse Project recaptures that kind of atmosphere ? as I said, it feels as though you shouldn?t be there, which is great.

Tell me about a few of your own personal WHP highlights.

It?s sounds like a clich but there have been so many. I guess playing with my peers and heroes is way up there. I played on the same bill as the man who started Underground Resistance (a seminal techno label), Mad Mike Banks ? just chatting with him in the back room at WHP was brilliant.

The Resident Advisor night last year was really good with Jamie Jones and Seth Troxler, they?re always good value.

If you could hazard a guess, what would you imagine is next for the event?

Not a clue! I?m sure whatever comes next, if anything, will be next level though.

For more information on this year’s Warehouse Project, which launches on September 17 with DJ Shadow headlining, head to thewarehouseproject.com

Greening closes in on Superbike crown

By John Hopkins / Photo by Bob Szoke

BOWMANVILLE, ON – Burlington, ON’s Jody Greening moved a step closer to locking up the K&N Performance Filters Amateur Superbike title with a third place finish in Saturday’s race at Mosport International Raceway on his BFE / ProStar / Sturgess Cycle Yamaha YZF-R1.

Gatineau, QC’s Tim Robinson won the race on his Robinson Racing / Belko Auto Body BMW S1000RR while pole qualifier Aubrey Bailey was second riding the HT Motorsports / ProStar / Velocity Sportsgear Honda CBR1000RR.

Greening takes a 49-point lead over Kristopher Garvie into Sunday's season finale. With 50 points available for a race win Garvie must win Sunday's event and hope Greening doesn't score if he is to have any hope of wresting the crown from Greening. Garvie finished seventh in Saturday's race on his Tracksport Technologies / Kahuna Powersports Kawasaki ZX-6R.

After qualifying third on the grid Robinson grabbed the lead off the start and stayed in front for all eight laps to take his first national event win. His final margin of victory over Bailey was 2.014 secs.

"This is only my third day on the bike and I'm having some challenges getting used to it," an elated Robinson said. "The power down the backstraight was incredible."

Mario Dumouchel of Ottawa finished fourth on a Suzuki GSX-R1000 and Mike Bevan of Amherstburg, ON was fifth aboard the Bevan Motorsport / Motovan / Kahuna Powersports Kawasaki ZX-10R.

Stacey Nesbitt (pictured) opened up a solid 29-point lead in the Honda CBR125R Challenge by scoring her third straight victory while nearest rival Austin Shaw-O’Leary of Falmouth, N.S. finished fifth at Mosport on Saturday.

The St-Lazare, QC racer finished just 0.704 secs. clear of Kemptville, ON’s Leah Vignale with Eric Green of Richmond, ON a close third. It marked the first time in Canadian road racing history that women had finished 1-2 in a national event and on Sunday Nesbitt will try to become the first female national road race champion in Canadian history.

"It was a great race," said Nesbitt, who came out on top of a lead draft that consisted of six bikes at the finish. "Everybody seemed to be able to pass me in turn two but I was able to get them back on the backstraight."

Green made a particularly impressive charge from the back of the grid to make the podium after a crash in qualifying on Friday had prevented him from recording a time.

Schedule delays meant the Inside Motorcycles Amateur Sport Bike class was unable to complete its race on Saturday. That event will instead be run on Sunday morning.

Garvie leads the standings by 73 points over Edward Rudkowski and 74 points more than Samuel Proulx.

Stoner Claims Pole; Sets New Lap Record at Indianapolis

Story by Vicki Schouten

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway may not be Casey Stoner's favourite circuit on the MotoGP tour, but the Australian rider appears to be managing alright having set pole position in today's MotoGP qualifying with a new lap record with a time of a blistering 1:38:850. The previous track record was a time of 1:39:730 set by Dani Pedrosa in 2009. Following complaints that last year the track was too bumpy, and this year the freshly re-paved track is too slick, the Repsol Honda rider seems to be figuring it out better than his competition. Stoner was untouchable in Saturday afternoon's qualifier.

Factory Yamaha's Ben Spies has been on the heals of Casey Stoner all weekend and appears to be his only real competition at the moment. The Texan worked hard to close the gap, dropping his lap times consistently, until Stoner pulled of a 1:38:850 that remained unmatched for the rest of the session. While the Yamaha team did everything they could to match Stoner's pace, the best they could muster up was a 1:39:373, enough to take second position on the grid for Sunday's race.

Perhaps the most impressive story of the day was Spies' Yamaha team mate Jorge Lorenzo, who up until Saturday afternoon had been experiencing a weekend that could only be described as a "nightmare". The defending world champion had been struggling with set up, particularly with the front end of the motorcycle all weekend long and things did not look promising for the Spaniard. The team had made a number of changes to the motorcycle, and compared the data from Spies' Yamaha (though in the end chose a different set-up) and with less than 10 minutes remaining in Saturday's qualifying session, Lorenzo was able to log a time of 1:39:629, enough for a front row start on Sunday.

Dani Pedrosa was the only other rider to break the 1:40 mark, and with a time of 1:39:947 the Repsol Honda rider will start in 4th position.

The biggest question amongst all riders in Sunday's race remains the issue of traction. Riders are concerned that a slippery track off the race line will make passing difficult and will significantly impact the race scenario. It seems that it is anyone's guess what will happen on the new pavement on Sunday; only time will tell.

Christie adds to Sport Bike lead

By John Hopkins / Photos by Bob Szoke

BOWMANVILLE, ON – Jodi Christie extended his lead in the Pirelli Pro Sport Bike standings by claiming the Kawasaki S4-R Competition Lubricants Pole Award at Mosport International Raceway on Friday for this weekend’s final two races on his Jodi Christie Racing / Cameron Cycle / Blue Streak Racing Honda CBR600RR.

The Keene, ON racer turned a time of 1:24.312 to improve his point total to 241 against 214 for Uxbridge, ON’s Alex Welsh, who qualified the Z1 CycleTech / Kenwood Suzuki GSX-R600 fourth.

Splitting the two title rivals on the grid will be Belfountain, ON’s Kenny Reidman, who turned a lap of 1:24.356 on the Reidman Racing Triumph 675, and Bodhi Edie of Warman, SK, who set a 1:24.390 riding the Edie Racing / Acceleration Racing / Honda Canada Honda CBR600RR.

Christie set his time about 12 minutes through the 20-minute session after getting a late start on action.

"I didn't hear the five-minute horn so I was a little late getting out," he explained after taking his second pole of the season. "I just had to clear my head and get in some laps. We made one minimal change during the session but I didn't want to upset things."

Reidman had come out of the gate flying and laid down his best lap early in the session. Despite missing out on pole the Triumph rider claimed his best career starting spot in the Pro Sport Bike class.

Coming off a career high third place finish at Atlantic Motorsport Park two weeks ago rookie Edie continued to show excellent late season form. Two points for qualifying third moved him into a tie for third spot in the class point standings with Woodbridge, ON's Frank Trombino, who qualified fifth on the Suzuki Canada / Hindle / Sturgess Cycle Suzuki GSX-R600.

Crevier claims XR1200 crown

By John Hopkins / Photo by Bob Szoke

BOWMANVILLE, ON – A fourth place finish was enough to give Maple Ridge, BC’s Steve Crevier the Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup title at Mosport International Raceway on Saturday. The rider of the MotoSport Plus of Kingston-based entry has an unassailable 68-point lead over Cochrane, AB’s Cody Matechuk, who finished seventh on Saturday on his Privateers Harley-Davidson XR1200 with only Sunday's race remaining in the season.

Michael Barnes of Boca Raton, FL led a Ruthless Racing / Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada sweep of the podium, edging Calgary’s John Ross MacRae by 0.350 secs. with North Vancouver rider Darren James just another three-tenths of a second back.

Crevier came into the race needing only to finish ahead of Matechuk to lock up an 11th Canadian national road racing crown. After qualifying fifth he spent most of the racing mixing it up in a four-rider lead pack with the Ruthless team of Barnes, MacRae and pole qualifier James. With two laps to go Crevier dropped off from the lead train to secure the championship.

"I decided at the end of the race it was getting risky," Crevier admitted. "I thought it was time to back it up and get my championship. Tomorrow [in the second race of the doubleheader] I want to get into trouble, not stay out of trouble.

"I have to thank [crew chief] Pete Snell for talking me into racing in this series and working hard for me."

Making his first appearance of the year in the series, Barnes led the most laps in the 14-lap race.

"I had a blast, it was a really, really enjoyable race," said Barnes, who won an electric motorcycle race here at Mosport last summer.

Second place for MacRae was his best finish of the year, and he received the Performance Under Gear Performer of the Race Award for his effort.

With third place in the race James closed to within five points of Samuel Proulx for third place in the final XR1200 Cup point standings heading into Sunday's finale. After sticking with the lead battle early on the Magog, QC racer finished fifth on his Sherbrooke Harley-Davidson-backed bike.

A poor start left James sixth at the end of the opening lap but he got himself onto the back of the lead train and passed Crevier two laps from the end.

"I destroyed this motor yesterday so I have to give a big shout out to the team," James said. "They worked until four in the morning for me and I wish I could give them a better finish."

James also hinted that the lighter Barnes and MacRae had an advantage over he and Crevier on the long Mosport backstraight.

"'Barney and JR are a couple of buck 25'ers [125 pounders] and they could walk past us on the straightaway," he said.

Behind Proulx in fifth, Chris Harmon of Bracebridge, ON on the Vision Harley-Davidson entry edged Matechuk, guest rider Oliver Jervis of Victoria, and the Harley-Davidson de L'Outaouais entry of Ottawa's Elie Daccache in another dramatic fight for sixth.

McCormick clinches Superbike title

By John Hopkins / Photo by Bob Szoke

BOWMANVILLE, ON – Brett McCormick celebrated his 20th birthday in style by clinching his first Canadian Superbike Championship by Parts Canada title with a dramatic victory at Mosport International Raceway on Saturday.

The radX / BMW Motorrad Canada BMW S1000RR rider passed the Competition Systems Kawasaki Race Team Kawasaki ZX-10R of Jordan Szoke in the last turn and held on for a 0.053-sec. victory.

The win was the sixth of the season for the Saskatoon rider and put him in an uncatchable position in the Canadian Superbike Championship standings with just Sunday’s season finale left to run. He now has 328 points to the 266 of Szoke with a maximum of 52 points available on Sunday.

“I’m a bit speechless right now,” McCormick said. “It’s been an amazing season with an amazing team. I’m shaking; it’s a bizarre feeling.”

McCormick completed the 20 laps around the 3.957km track in 27 minutes, 24.935 seconds for an average speed of 173.201km/h.

Szoke grabbed the holeshot and by the end of the opening lap he and McCormick had pulled clear of the rest of the field. The five-time defending Superbike champion led 17 laps despite occasional challenges from McCormick, who led laps 11-12.

Szoke led as two leaders headed into the turn 10 right hander, the final corner before the finish line. McCormick made a dive to the inside and snuck ahead. Szoke tried to power back in front but couldn’t quite make it.

“It was a super-fun race and it’s great to battle for the championship like that,” McCormick said. “His bike had a little bit more motor than mine but I was a bit quicker through the corners and that made for a great race.”

Szoke said his bike ran just short of fuel as he and McCormick raced through the final few corners.

“It’s just one of those things,” he admitted. “Brett ran wide out of turn eight and I tried to get inside him and I just had no power. But no excuses. Brett deserves the number one plate; he’s a great talent. I’m glad I was able to give him a battle today.”

While McCormick has clinched the Canadian Superbike title he goes into Sunday’s final round with a chance to complete a perfect season, something only done once previously, by Szoke last season.

In another tremendous battle Andrew Nelson came out on top of a four-rider scrap for the final podium spot. The rider of the Nelson Racing / GymMax / Monette Sports BMW S1000RR made up for a horrible start that saw him complete the opening lap in seventh spot to snatch third from Michael Ferreira by just 0.380 secs.

“It was a good battle with Mike,” said the Kars, Ont. rider, who also gained sole position of third place in the Canadian Superbike point standings. “I think I saved just enough rear tire to get good drives down the backstraight at the end.”

Mississauga, Ont.’s Ferreira settled for fourth on the radX / BMW Motorrad Canada BMW S1000RR while Jodi Christie of Keene, Ont. was a close fifth on his Jodi Christie Racing / Cameron Cycle / Blue Streak Racing Honda CBR1000RR, which put him alone in fifth spot in the series standings.

Matt McBride of Mississauga, Ont. was at the back of this group on his Riders Choice / BMW Toronto Motorrad BMW S1000RR.

Uxbridge, Ont.’s Alex Welsh was also part of the third place battle after making an impressive charge from 13th on the grid to sit third by lap three. But he crashed his Z1 CycleTech / Kenwood Suzuki GSX-R1000 in turn five on lap nine.
