Is Wembleyitis, like smallpox and rickets, a disease of the past?
One thing you used to be able to count on was teams putting on sub-standard performances in the run-up to a Cup final.
So, on that basis, last weekend should have been a good one on which to play Wigan and Leeds.
Not really. Wigan whipped Salford, whilst the Rhinos were even more emphatic winners over Castleford. So much for another theory.
In fact, there were some special circumstances involved. Salford?s goal-line defence was disgraceful. I thought I?d been pretty hard on them on Radio Manchester, until I heard their coach?s assessment, which made mine sound mild.
As for Cas, it was always on the cards that they would hit the buffers in the repeat of their semi-final against Leeds. There?s disappointment and there?s disappointment; when you lose a semi with Cas, you must fear that your only chance of getting to Wembley might have come and gone.
Can Bradford or Harlequins make any better fist of it this weekend? Not on last week?s form they can?t, but I still maintain that it?s the ideal time to play finalists.
And I believe rickets is making a come-back in some deprived corners of Britain as well.
